Understanding Net Zero: What It Means For Your Business

Since last year, the news has been dominated by the rising cost of energy and living expenses due to record-high inflation.

It's also simple to assume that net zero will start to take a back seat given the present supply chain issues and the surge in energy costs that is hitting industries, but in some respects, it is more crucial than ever.

How are small businesses responding to Net Zero?

Despite the ubiquity of net zero in the media, most businesses are still unsure as to how they could reduce their carbon footprint.

In a recent study by StartUp Loans, research found that 78% of respondents said they don't completely understand

what 'net zero' and 'carbon neutral' mean.

Additionally, 67% of respondents had never sought for information on lowering their carbon footprint, and 46% are unsure of where to obtain this information. 50% of respondents said they would like to know whether cutting carbon emissions would benefit their business financially.

From this study, we understand that climate change jargon can be extremely difficult to understand and obtaining information on how to take practical action to offset your carbon emissions can be just as confusing.

What does 'Net Zero' mean for your business?

According to the UK government, addressing climate change will help companies expand, take advantage of new possibilities, generate new employment, promote investment, and prepare for the difficulties posed by a changing planet.

By reducing your carbon emissions, you can expect the following benefits:

  • save more money

  • attract new customers and potential investors

  • maintain a competitive advantage

  • qualify for tax benefits

  • build a sustainable supply chain
